The focus of the strength component is not as much on outcomes as in providing the means that enables the athlete to become more explosive. In other words, the strength objective is to develop a strong, balanced foundation that prepares the body for the stresses associated with the more ballistic, explosive lifts. For this reason, strength and explosive training sessions are alternated over the course of the week.
The ideal training regime to prepare athletes for competition is one which develops functional strength. For this reason, the Kratos strength component focuses on multiple joint, closed-loop exercises performed in multiple planes. In addition to developing functional strength, core strength develops concurrently.
A critical oversight in some strength programs is the failure to recognize and address the importance of the posterior chain in speed and movement. Muscular imbalance between the quads and the antagonistic hamstrings not only limits speed potential but also increases the risk of injury. The Kratos program gives the appropriate focus to the posterior chain to maintain the strength ratios and maximize athletic performance.
